Used some lovely Bourns pots this time (a very nice alternative to CTS)

#straturday Another 're-refinish' (and re-fret) this time an 1982 '57 Reissue Strat.

Original re-finish was done well (albeit super thick) but the replacement decal was quite off the mark.
Nice thin-skin nitro, vintage correct decal and some stainless steel frets did the trick 👌🏼

Side note for fellow luthiers/woodworkers - this Dewalt router is INSANE. Have owned many routers, this one is the best I've ever used by a long shot. Just for context, I'm only using one hand to control the router in this video, the other hand is holding my phone. Check out the close up on the bit in the last part of the video - ZERO drift, shaking or funny business - so good.

This one has definitely raised some questions (and I'm not surprised!)
At the end of the day the client simply wanted a 6-string Maton with the nut width and string spacing of a 12-string, which unfortunately Maton don't offer - unless you're willing to go to a Custom Shop instrument ($$$$)
.
So, what would you do? Modify a guitar you already own and love to get the specs you need? Or go all out and spend 2-3 times the price on a fully custom instrument?
There's no wrong answer, but I know what I'd do 😉

The bridge - part 2 of the Maton 12 to 6 string conversion.

To answer the first question on your mind - yes, this was easier (and cheaper) than building a new bridge from scratch. The main reason being Maton's unique pickup system - the cutout of which is rather finicky and time consuming to recreate (have tried once in the past)
.
This option is quick, straightforward, clean and best of all keeps the original bridge on the guitar. It's also invisible unless you catch it in just the right light!

Yep - same headstock, same guitar. One of the more interesting things I've done of late was converting this Maton 12-string to a 6-string.

Why? To paraphrase the client.. "I love the guitar and it's cheaper than a full custom" - hard to argue with that logic. Plus, it was fun.
